DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. — The Jackson State University volleyball team earned their ninth conference win on Sunday afternoon over Bethune-Cookman (5-16), remaining undefeated in the SWAC and improving to 9-11 overall.
Jackson State took the first two sets with final scores of 25-19 and 25-14, respectively. The two teams traded points in the first set until an attack error by the BCU hitters followed by a kill by Marina Bianchi Brito gave the Tigers a three-point advantage (14-11), before going on a six-point run to increase the lead with a score of 20-12.
The Tigers got off to a quicker start in the second set, going on a 4-1 scoring run to earn a five-point lead over BCU on three attack errors by their opponents' hitters to make it 12-7 before scoring seven straight points to go up by 10. The Tigers lost the third set of the match with a final score of 25-12, and then won the final set to clinch the victory with a score of 25-10.
Alexis Williams led the Tigers in the win against BCU with 19.5 points scored on 18 kills and a single ace and block assist each, and dug out 17 balls for her ninth double-double of the season. Marina Bianchi Brito had a breakout performance, scoring 16.5 points on 11 kills and five solo blocks, her highest-scoring game of the season.
The Tigers head to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on Florida A&M on October 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the next outing of the 2021 season.
