Box Score HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA -- Jackson State University volleyball earned their third-straight win of the 2021 fall season this afternoon in Huntsville against Alabama A&M University in a dominant performance.
The Tigers started off strong in the opening set, holding a lead throughout the entire set, and ended the first stanza with a .389 hitting percentage, their highest of the match.
Alexis Williams got the offense started for the Tigers, landing eight kills and scoring nine points before the first set finished with a final score of 25-16. The Bulldogs battled in the second set, forcing three ties until
Marina Bianchi Brito landed a kill to put the Tigers ahead 9-8. The Bulldogs never got the lead back, but they did score one additional point than the set prior.
The final set of the match was a shorter battle as both teams traded points until an AAMU service error put Jackson State up with a score of 5-3. The Tigers then went on a 6-2 scoring run to give the Tigers a comfortable cushion to seal the win with a final score of 25-16 in the final set of the match.
Jackson State's offense ended with a hitting percentage of .259, landing 34 kills on 81 total attacks, while the blockers recorded 10 block assists. Williams led the team in kills and scoring with 14 and 16.5 respectively, and added seven digs and a single block assist to the team totals. Freshman
Olivia Flanagan, who was just named SWAC Newcomer of the Week, added 10 kills and 10.5 points.
Trinity Bryant had a solid defensive performance as the defensive specialist, recording seven digs and also scoring two points off service aces.
Damassy Thompson motored the offense yet again with 28 assists, and additionally had two digs and scored two points off block assists.
With the win, Jackson State University volleyball improves to a 3-10 overall record while remaining undefeated at 3-0 in the SWAC. They head to Montgomery, Alabama to take on Alabama State tomorrow (Monday) evening in what will probably be a highly competitive match. First serve for tomorrow is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.
