JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State defeated Mississippi Valley State 28-19 and improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
MVSU (2-6, 1-4 SWAC) scored a field goal on the opening series, however, JSU quickly countered.
Freshman
Shedeur Sanders connected with senior
Josh Lanier with a 21-yard touchdown and the Tigers led 7-3. The Delta Devils added a field goal at the end of the first quarter and the Tigers went to halftime with a 7-6 lead.
MVSU opened the second half with a touchdown and led 12-7.
JSU promptly responded.
Sanders connected with freshman
Malachi Wideman for 41-yard pitch-and-catch and the Tigers led 14-12.
The Tiger defense added a key touchdown when
Al Young picked up a Delta Devil fumble and rumbled 26 yards for a touchdown and JSU led 21-12.
After MVSU added a touchdown, the Tigers found paydirt when Sanders found freshman
Trevonte Rucker for a 74-yard touchdown and the Blue and White closed out the win.
The JSU defense pressured MVSU throughout the contest and recorded four interceptions (
Al Young,
Randall Haynie,
Nyles Gaddy, and
CJ Holmes).
