Baton Rouge, La. — The Jackson State University Tigers earned two wins by sweep on the first day of the SWAC Western Cluster Two against Prairie View A&M and Southern University. The wins improve Jackson State to 11-12 overall through the 2021 fall season, with a SWAC record of 11-1.
Tiger volleyball dominated the competition tonight, holding both teams under 20 points-scored in all six sets played on the first day of matches in the SWAC Western Cluster Two. The offense was humming in the first match of the day against Prairie View, with five hitters finishing with a hitting percentage above .300, and the offense as a whole posting a percentage of .360 overall. Alexis Williams led the offense with a double-double, earning 13 kills and 12 digs with four service aces for a total of 18 points scored. Damassy Thompson was a motor again, putting up 37 assists and supplementing the offense with 2.5 points on a block assist and a service ace.
The Tigers won the second match against Southern with final set scores of 25-19, 25-11, and 25-19, with 50 of the Tigers' points earned by kills. In comparison, Southern scored 23 points off kills. Marino Bianchi Brito was the most efficient hitter on the Tiger offense in the evening match, earning 12 kills on 18 attempts for a final hitting percentage of .556. Williams recorded a total of 20 kills on the day with another 17 against Southern, yet again leading the offense in scoring with 19.5 points.
