Tigers Control Throughout Friday Win Over Alcorn State

JACKSON, Miss - The Jackson State women's soccer dictated the run of play for the duration of Friday's contest versus Alcorn State at the JSU Soccer Field.

Junior Ayanna Pinder bagged her first goal of the season just ten minutes into the game to spark a four-goal explosion by the Jackson State women's soccer team, as they beat Alcorn State 4-2.

Pinder, received a pass from sophomore Maya-Joy Thompson near the top of the box and fired a right footed shot into the bottom corner of the goal. The goal seemed to open the floodgates for the Tigers (3-10-1, 2-2-1 SWAC) who has scored eight goals in SWAC play the last two games.

"We've scored eight goals in the last two matches and you can make a strong case we should have had more so we are going in a good direction," head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "Good defending, nice ball movement, and a cutting edge in the final third that produced some excellent moments. We do need to start posting shutouts as well as finishing more clear cut chances, but it was a very good team performance."

Alcorn State scored in the 11th minute with a goal from D'Ana Prierto.

Sophomore Annalise Brunson extended the Tigers lead with a solo effort in the 20th minute of the first half.

Shortly after in the 23rd minute, Kyla Sands received a pass from Ayanna Pinder and found the net off of a beautiful header to record her second consecutive goal in back-to-back matches.

The Tigers came out of the halftime break and put the pressure right back on Alcorn State. Senior Ana Leticia Batista capped off the scoring for Jackson State in the 84th minute notching her first goal this season.

"We were on top for long stretches of the match and our energy today had no limits. Our ideas and passing are improving all the time and while I don't think our evolution is complete we are tough to play against, which is how we want it. Very proud of the team and the players today", Flogaites said.

Alcorn State grabbed a late goal to make the final score 4-2.

This marks the second consecutive win for the Tigers as they look to remain in the win column. Jackson State will return to action at home against Mississippi Valley Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10.
