VB Earns Back-To-Back SWAC Regular Season Championships with Win over Miss. Valley

ITTA BENA, MS. -- The Jackson State University volleyball program earned the fifth SWAC Regular Season Championship on Thursday night with a 3-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State.

The Tigers started the match on an 8-3 scoring run, and kept the foot on the gas for the remainder of the set increasing their lead to 19-7. Valley scored five unanswered points to recover some ground (22-15), however a service error and pair of kills by Alexis Williams gave JSU the first set with a final score of 25-15.  The Tigers rolled through the second set of the match as well, holding Valley to just 10 points scored and hitting 90 percent (14-for-25).

MVSU won the highly-competitive third set of the match after the teams traded points for the majority of the set, but the Tiger volleyball program earned the final win of the regular season in the fourth set with a final score of 25-17.

Freshman Janet Tchouangwa got the first at setter, putting up 31 assists. As a team, the offense hit for a percentage of 23.9, earning 45 total kills, while the blockers put up six total blocks at the net. Defensively, three Tigers finished the match in double-figures for digs. Trinity Bryant led the defense with 15, while Jylen Whitten added 13 and Tchouangwa added 10. Alexis Williams led the team in kills and scoring, with 18 and 21 points respectively, and Whitten added 7 kills and 11 points to the cause.

The Tigers finished the regular season with a final record of 15-12, with a SWAC record of 15-1, and will head into the SWAC Tournament in Huntsville as the number one seed next week.
