JACKSON, MS. — Jackson State University volleyball improved to 13-12 with a victory over the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University Sunday evening with a final score of 3-1.
Jackson State cruised through the first two sets, earning set wins with final scores of 25-15 and 25-9. The Tiger offense out-hit the Bulldogs with hitting percentages of .312 to -.0.47 through the first two sets of the match, and the sets combined only had four lead changes.
Alabama A&M took the third set, which was highly contested and included eight tie-scores, with a final score of 25-22. Jackson State earned the overall win in the fourth set, holding the Bulldogs to 13 points scored and earning eight kills on 13 attempts.
Two Tigers finished with double-doubles, with Alexis Williams leading the team in scoring with 21 points on 18 kills, two service aces, and also recorded 11 digs to put her at a double-double.
Jylen Whitten added 17.5 points scored on 14 kills, two service aces, and also finished with a double-double with 10 digs.
The bigs at the net played their part in the win over AAMU, putting up 11 block assists on the night. Taila Gaines was responsible for five of them. Defensively, three Tigers finished in double figures for digs, and true freshman Trinity Bryant led the team with 17 digs, a season and career high.
Jackson State volleyball will wrap up the regular season at home with a match against Alabama State. First serve is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
