AMES, IOWA - Down by as much as 15 points in the game, Jackson State stormed back to cut the deficit down to seven with less than three minutes to go but could not complete the comeback in falling to No. 17 Iowa State, 47-37, on Sunday afternoon inside the Hilton Coliseum.
Jonas James III finished with a team high 11 points shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field.
Terence Lewis II was the other Tiger who finished in double figures with 10 points and he collected 7 rebounds on the glass.
In the end it was turnovers that hurt JSU (2-6) the most. The Tigers committed a season-high 22 turnovers which led to 14 points for ISU (10-0). Eight of those 22 came in the first 10 minutes of the game which allowed the Cyclones to jump out to a commanding 19-4 lead.
The Tigers were able to find their rhythm, especially on offense, to outscore the Cyclones by five the rest of the stanza as Coltie Young hit his second three-pointer at the sound of the horn to be down 20-28 at intermission.
After a 7-0 run by thy Cyclones to begin the second half, JSU was finally able to get the deficit back into single digits by answering with a 7-0 run at the eight minute mark in the second half, 37-29. Terence Lewis II knocked down a jumper, Dyllan Taylor hit two free throws, and Jonas James III drilled a three-pointer from NBA range.
From there, ISU was able to go 6-of-9 from the charity stripe to prevent the comeback from happening.
"I thought our guys fought and played with a lot of energy and emotions against a very good Iowa State basketball team," said head coach Wayne Brent. "We have to work on our turnovers as a team and continue to get better as au nit, but overall our guys played to win the game in a very hostile environment against the No. 17 team in the country."
