Box Score NACAGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Jackson State University volleyball program ended their season today in the first round of the NIVC Tournament with a 3-1 loss to the host institution, Stephen F. Austin.
The Jacks took the first, third, and fourth sets with scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-12, while the Tigers won the second set. JSU started the set trailing 3-0, and were able to work back to tie the Jacks at six. The set remained close and would have six additional tie-scores forced before Jackson State ultimately pulled out the win with an attack error by junior setter Damassy Thompson, and an attack error by the Jack hitters to bring the score to 25-21.
Jylen Whitten led the Tiger offense with 18 kills and 19 points scored. Alexis Williams added 10 kills to the total. Thompson motored the offense with 38 kills and contributed 15 digs to the defense, ending the season with yet another double-double. Williams also contributed 10 digs on defense, finishing with a double-double as well. Alana Washington finished the match with 17 digs, the highest on the squad.
"I think we had a very good season.", said head coach Rose Washington. "It says a lot about how we started the season, ended up clinching the regular season, and making not just the SWAC Championship match, but postseason as well. I hope to add a couple players, but for the most part this team will be back and better for next year. We're really excited to start preparing."
Jackson State finished the 2021 season with a final record of 17-14, earning the second-straight conference championship and landing five on SWAC All-Conference teams.
