LORMAN, Miss. – Jackson State used a late-innings surge to defeat Alcorn State 10-5 Saturday afternoon in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The Tigers improved to 9-5 overall and 5-0 in SWAC play, while the Braves fall to 3-3 and 2-2 in the conference.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth,
Chenar Brown tripled to right field to push across two runs. JSU added two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth inning to ice the game.
Chandler Dillard batted 3-for-6 and scored a run, while
Wesley Reyes finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and scored one run.
Leadoff hitter
Jatavious Melton batted 2-for-4 and scored three runs and
Ty Hill went 2-for-5 and scored two runs.
CJ Newsome and
Marshal Luiz each picked up a hit.
Austin Campbell entered in relief and tossed 4 1/3 innings and scattered two hits, allowed no runs, and struck out one batter to earn the win.
Mario Lopez started and absorbed a no-decision. The lefty threw four frames and allowed five hits, three runs, and one walk while fanning a batter.
The Tigers were busy on the base paths with Melton swiping four bases, Newsome with two, and Reyes and Luiz each with one.
The Blue Bengals return to the diamond Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
