MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jackson State held onto and clinched game one versus Alabama State by a final score of 8-7 Friday night at ASU Stadium in Montgomery, Ala.
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with runs in the first and second inning before piling on a four run third to quickly take control of the contest.
ASU erased two runs in the bottom half of the third to cut the lead back to 6-2 before JSU once again notched a single run in the fourth inning to go ahead 7-2.
Jackson State added one more in the top half of the fifth inning, but a four spot in the bottom of the fifth by ASU pulled the Hornets within 8-6. The Tigers surrendered one more run in the eighth inning but were able to hold onto the lead, shutting ASU out in the ninth inning to take the game by a final of 8-7 in game one.
Jackson State put together six hits total as a team and were led offensively by
Chenar Brown. Brown finished with two hits including a home run and a triple in the contest.
Chandler Dillard pilled together two hits in the game. Dillard and Brown each led JSU with three runs batted in.
Equon Smith tallied a team-high three runs scored.
Anthon Beccara went 4.0 innings on the mound, surrendering just two runs on three hits while striking out eight opposing hitters.
Steven Davila picked on the win in relief, going 3.0 innings pitched out of the bullpen.
With the win, Jackson State improves to 4-5 overall on the season. JSU goes for the series win tomorrow with first pitch set for 6 p.m. at ASU Stadium.
