JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State Lady Tigers became the SWAC Regular Season Champions in back-to-back years after defeating Alabama State in a thrilling 64-62 victory in dramatic fashion.
The Lady Tigers trailed 20-13 after the first quarter of play but were able to use an 11-9 second quarter to take a 29-24 score into the break, with Alabama State leading by five.
In the second half of play, Jackson State utilized a 21-13 third quarter scoring effort to take the lead 46-42 lead into the fourth and final quarter of play.
Jackson State took a three-point lead on a pair of free throws by
J'Niya Tallie with 53 seconds to play, taking a 60-57 lead. Alabama State converted a layup to pull within a one-point 60-59 score before a JSU layup to go back up 62-59.
The Lady Hornets knocked down a three-pointer with 20-seconds left in regulation to tie the score oup at 62-62. In a thrilling final moments, Jackson State knocked down two free throws to clinch the game and regular season SWAC Championship by a final score of 64-62.
Ameshya Williams led JSU with 19 points, 16 rebounds, and six blocked shots to top off the regular season against the lone team to defeat the Lady Tigers.
Dayzsha Rogan added 15 points,
Elexis Peyton had nine points,
Keshuna Luckett totalled 11 points, and Tallie finished with nine assists.
Jackson State improved to 15-5 overall on the season and 14-1 in SWAC regular season play. The Lady Tigers will be seeded the No. 1 team in the SWAC tournament starting on Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala.
