JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State completed the comeback in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon, defeating Alabama State by a final of 9-8 after a walk off wild pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with one run in the first and two runs in the second inning. Alabama State got one in the fourth inning, yet the Tigers turned back around in the bottom half of the fourth and added the run back to take a 4-1 lead.
Alabama State used a big top half of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits to take their first lead of the afternoon, 5-4, over Jackson State.
Alabama State put three runs on board in the top half of the seventh inning to take a four run lead, 8-4, with the help of a two run home run. Down 8-4, Jackson State utilized a four run bottom half of the eighth inning to tie the game up at 8-8 heading into the ninth inning.
In the ninth inning, JSU loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch allowed the Tigers to cross over the winning run to seal the series 2-0, after the walk off win, 9-8.
Jatavious Melton and
Chenar Brown led the Tigers with two hits each in the contest. Melton produced three runs for the Tigers and added a run on the base path.
Equon Smith and Jeffrey Rodriquez each tallied a run for the contest.
Wesley Reyes had two runs scored for the Tigers. The win presevered the Tigers undefeated SWAC record at 14-0, while also eclipsing 20 wins on the season with a current 20-7 overall record.
Jackson State owns a six game lead over second place Alabama State in the SWAC rankings, as they look to take the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
