JACKSON, Miss. – As the Jackson State football team works through training camp and ramp up for the season opener, the Tigers' linebackers corps is settling in.
Â
The unit returns two All-SWAC First Team selections from the Spring 2021 season, seniors
Keonte Hampton and
Aubrey Miller, Jr. The duo wreaked havoc on the opposing offenses this past spring.
Â
Hampton and Miller, Jr. ranked first and second in the conference in total tackles, adding 58 and 51 tackles respectfully. Hampton was also named to the
Black College Football Hall of Fame Player of the Year Watch List.
Â
"Really strong unit," said JSU linebackers coach
Andre' Hart. "We have several freshmen that have joined the program and had Power 5 offers and they decided to join us. We have a smart, tough, fast disciplined unit."
Â
The duo was introduced to the nation this past spring when JSU stood tall for a fourth-quarter goal-line stand at Grambling State. Miller, Jr. forced the fumble and Hampton recovered it to clinch the win.
Â
Also joining the mix this season is
James Houston, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker and graduate transfer from Florida. Houston played in 35 career games for the Gators and has totaled 103 career tackles.
Â
Also in camp are
Baron Hopson,
Jeremiah Brown,
Daelyn Dunn,
Khalil Arrington, and
Drew Anthony.
Â
"I expect them to compete and raise the bar and they've done that," added Hart. "They've been total professionals, been in their books studying, taking care of their bodies, and taking care of each other."
