AUBURN, ALA. — The Jackson State University women's volleyball season is officially underway after completing their first two matches at the War Eagle Invitational, hosted by Auburn University.
Match One - Tennessee Tech University
Jackson State took the first set of the day against the Tennessee Tech. University Eagles with a score of 25-20. The Tiger middles put the wall up early in the opening set, combining for nine total blocks, and held the Eagles to nine kills on 35 attempts (.057 hitting percentage), and forced seven hitting errors.
Tennessee Tech. (1-1) took the next three sets to win their first match of the season after dropping a three-set match to Auburn University on Friday night. Although they lost, the Tigers fought hard, coming back from a five-point deficit at set point twice in the match.
JSU's Alexis Williams and Jylen Whitten almost recorded double-doubles in the first match of the season. Williams led the Tigers in kills with 11, and added eight digs. Whitten added nine kills and 11 digs. True freshman Olivia Flanagan led the team in hitting with an average of .333 in her first match of her collegiate career with eight kills and one hitting error on 21 total attempts, and added four block assists.
The Jackson State blockers finished with 17 total blocks and two block errors against the Eagles, led by another true freshman Jordan Jones, who recorded two solo blocks and four block assists.
Match Two- Auburn University
The JSU Tigers (0-2) dropped the match against the host team, Auburn University with a final score of 3-0. Auburn finished the War Eagle Invitational 2-0.
Jordan Jones led the team in scoring with seven points scored off six kills, and two block assists. Alexis Williams added four kills and three block assists, for a total of 6.5 points. Damassy Thompson nearly had a double-double against Auburn, with 12 assists and eight digs, as well.
Jackson State volleyball continues a road stretch with a weekday match against Louisiana Tech scheduled for Sept. 1.
