Tigers Dominate FAMU to open SWAC Season

JACKSON, MISS. - The Jackson State University volleyball team opened up at home with a 3-0 win tonight over the Rattlers of Florida A&M University. With the loss, the Rattlers fall to 8-5, while the Tigers earned their first win of the 2021 fall volleyball season.

The Tigers opened up strong with a sizeable lead over FAMU, forcing them to take a timeout at the 14-11 mark. The Tigers scored three more points, forcing FAMU to take another timeout and regroup with a six-point deficit.
FAMU started inching their way back into the first set with the help of multiple errors on behalf of the Tigers, and the set was tied at 24-all. The two teams traded leads in extras until a kill by Jordan Jones tied the set up for good at 26-all, and the Tigers took the first set with an attack error by the FAMU hitters, and an Olivia Flanagan kill. Flanagan led the offense with six kills through the first set.

The Tigers made the wall up front in the second set, finishing with six blocks and holding an offensively-sound FAMU squad to a hitting percentage of .152. Jordan Jones led the effort with three block assists in the second stanza, and Jackson State won with a score of 26-24.

Alexis Williams took over in the final set, adding 7 kills to the effort in the win over the Rattlers. She finished with 15 kills and 16 points, which led the team. Damassy Thompson motored the offense with 34 assists and a success percentage of .366. Jordan Jones finished with five block assists and eight kills.

The Tigers return to the AAC on Sunday afternoon for a matchup against Bethune-Cookman. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
