Soccer Drops Contest To Southern Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss - The Jackson State women's soccer team dropped Sunday afternoon's match to Southern Mississippi by a final score of 6-0.

"This was not the team that played against Troy. Credit to USM, they caused us problems and we went missing today",  head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "We never arrived at the match, and regardless of the result that's on me. I failed to get the team in the right mindset to compete, failed to motivate them adequately, and failed to translate properly how important it was to follow up the the Troy match with another good performance."

The match remained scoreless until the 14th minute when Southern Mississippi's Nolubabalo Sishuba found the net with a header off a crossing pass from Sam Stiglmair, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

Southern Mississippi's increased their lead 2-0 in the 25th minute off of an own goal.

Alice Campos extended Southern Mississippi's lead to 3-0 just before the end of the first half, after scoring in the 44th minute.

A goal by Ilana Izquierdo that came in the 58th minute off of an assist by Ariel Diaz pushed Southern Mississippi's lead to 4-0.

Blessing Kingsley added to the Golden Eagles' goal total in the contest after netting a goal in the 68th minute, making the score 5-0.

Ember Temple capped off the scoring in the match with goal in the 79th minute.

"I am angry about the fact that we failed to produce the basics: desire, passion, drive, and energy," Flogaites added. "You are never winning a match at this level when those intangibles aren't present. I thought we were over these absurd scorelines and it was embarrassing on a lot of levels. We have to get our minds right for Thursday and I'm not asking for a good performance, we will perform well. We cannot waste our talent one minute longer or disrespect the game by not giving our best, that kind of mentality is over. We want to make the JSU community proud, we want to represent HBCU's in the right way, today we didn't do that and it is the most bitter pill to have to swallow. Every match is about earning our respect."

The Lady Tigers will return to the pitch on Thursday, September 9 when they host the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles at the JSU Soccer Field.
