JACKSON, MISS - It was a total team effort by the Jackson State men's basketball team on Saturday evening as they put an end to its three-game losing conference skid by having four Tigers score in double figures which led to a 75-64 victory over Prairie View A&M inside the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
JSU (3-12, 1-3 SWAC) ended up getting major contributions from several players tonight with forward
Terence Lewis II scoring a season-high 16 points with seven rebounds to lead the team, followed closely by guard
Dyllan Taylor who came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points (10 in the second half alone).
Two other Tigers posted double figures in scoring as well. Freshman
Malachi Wideman who received his first start recorded 12 points and
Chance Moore registered 12 points off the bench, respectively.
"I thought our guys played well considering how bad we played to open SWAC play," head coach
Wayne Brent said. "We finally look like the team that played in the non conference season."
It was sort of a roller coaster of a first half with three ties and four lead changes. The Tigers led majority of the first stanza, but Prairie View A&M (1-12, 1-4 SWAC) found themselves down six to the Tigers, 33-27 with 3:24 to play before intermission. The Panthers closed the half out with a 10-2 run that gave them the lead headed into halftime 37-35.
JSU was incredible on offense to start the second half, starting on a 7-0 run which consisted of a pull-up jumper from Wideman, a layup from Lewis II and
Coltie Young, and a free-throw from
Jonas James III to jump out to a 42-37 lead.
The Tigers intensified off of that run the entire second half leading by as much as 14 at the 3:56 mark, 69-55. Taking care of the basketball, high-percentage shot selections, and converting at the charity stripe put the game away for the Tigers as Jackson State secured their first conference victory of the season, 75-64.
