BOULDER, Colo.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 29-point showing from the bench, but fell 77-53 to the Colorado Buffaloes on the road Saturday.
The Lady Tigers (0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Daphane White, who had 12 points and nine rebounds. Miya Crump added 10 points off the bench and Daja Woodard added seven points and seven rebounds.
Led by Woodard's four offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 14 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Colorado turnovers. Those takeaways turned into eight points on the other end of the floor. Liz Martino led the way individually for the Lady Tigers with two steals.
How It Happened
Jackson State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 13-11.
Colorado kept adding to that lead, building a 29-18 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from White, to narrow its deficit to 29-23, a score that would hold until halftime.
Colorado continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 40-27 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from White, to trim its deficit to 40-32 with 4:31 to go in the third. Colorado countered and stretched its lead to 53-36 heading into the fourth. Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.
Jackson State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 77-53. Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 17 total points.
