Volleyball Closes Out Season in SWAC Semifinals

HOUSTON, Texas| The Jackson State volleyball team fell to Alabama State 3-0 (18-25, 16-25, 21-25) in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Semifinals Saturday at H&PE Arena. 

How It Happened

-Alabama State got off to an 8-4 lead to open the first set

-Jackson State fought its way back into the match as Olivia Flanagan registered a kill to put the Tigers within one of ASU, 11-10

-The Hornets began to slowly pull away as Emily Brooks recorded an ace to give ASU an 18-14 lead

-Alabama State closed the set out with a kill from Kalysia Bates put down a kill for a 25-18 first set victory

-ASU opened the second set similar to the first taking a 15-9 lead after capitalizing off a JSU error

-The deficit was too large for the Tigers to recover from as Alabama State took set two, 25-16

-A kill from Jylen Whitten put Jackson State on the board first in the second set

-ASU came back to take the lead, but the Tigers tied the score at five with a kill from Jordan Jones

-Both teams knotted the score five more times before ASU began to create space with an 18-15 lead

-A kill from Olivia Flanagan put the Tigers right back in the game tying the score at 18

-Jylen Whitten registered a kill to keep the Hornets close with the score tied at 19

-Alabama State went on a 6-2 run to close the match (25-21) and seal the semifinals victory, 3-0

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

-Alexis Williams led the Tigers' offense with 15 kills and tagging on four digs

-Jylen Whitten had seven kills, four digs and one ace

-Nevaeh Bray had three blocks while Jordan Jones and Taila Gaines each had two blocks

-Damassy Thompson tallied 17 assists and Karys Dove registered 16 assists

-Trinity Bryant recorded seven digs in the match

-Jackson State finished with 38 kills, 100 total attacks, 37 assists, 10 blocks and 30 digs
