Women's Basketball Downs Alcorn, Remain Undefeated in SWAC Play

LORMAN, Miss. – The Jackson State University Lady Tigers kept their undefeated streak in Southwestern Athletic Conference play intact on the season Saturday afternoon, defeating rival Alcorn State 65-44 here at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex.

With their 14th straight victory, the Lady Tigers increased their record to 16-6 overall, 14-0 in the SWAC.  Dating back to last season, JSU has now reeled off 30 consecutive victories over teams from the SWAC, including the SWAC tournament, and 27 straight wins over SWAC opponents in regular-season play.  The Lady Tigers' last loss to a SWAC opponent was a two-point, 72-20, loss at Alabama State on January 4, 2021.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers led Alcorn State by 11 points at the half, 34-23, before pulling away in the second half to secure their 21-point victory.  JSU was led by Ameshya Williams-Holliday (14 points, 10 rebounds), Deja Woodard (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Jariyah Covington (12 points).

"Every team we play from here on out is giving their best effort and that's what Alcorn did today," said JSU head coach Tomekia Reed.  "We had a very slow start and we lacked energy on the defensive end.  However, once we settled down and turned it up on defense, we were able to create more offense.  I was very proud of our resilience."

The Lady Tigers will look to extend their winning ways when they travel to Houston, Tex. next Saturday to face the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern.  Until then, Reed said her squad will concentrate on "r" and "r", rehab and recovery.

"We'll take a day or so off and focus on ourselves," said Reed.  "Rehab and recovery are the most important factors at this point of the season.  We'll get back at it Wednesday, preparing for our upcoming games."

Jackson State's game at Texas Southern on Saturday will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at TSU's Health and Physical Education Arena.
