Softball Loses To UT Martin On Final Day Of Capital City Invitational

The Jackson State University Lady Tigers softball team couldn't manage to duplicate their performance from a day earlier against visiting Tennessee Martin, losing on Saturday to the Skyhawks, 9-1 on the final day of the Capitol City Invitational.

The Southern University Lady Jaguars didn't fare any better against UT Martin, also losing to the Skyhawks by a score of 8-3, with both contests were played at the JSU Softball Stadium.

Jackson State got the first shot at UT Martin and got off to a good start after jumping out to a 1-0 lead after one inning, that run coming when Samiyyah Huckabee scored off an Isabel Gusman single up the middle.  Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, that proved to be their only run of the game.

The Skyhawks quickly jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning and never looked back.  They added five runs in the top of the fourth before tacking on two more in the top of the fifth.

With the loss, JSU fell to 8-7 on the season as UT Martin increased its record to 6-5 before facing Southern later in the day.

"Today was a tough day with the weather, but a good opportunity to work on our mental toughness," said JSU head coach Kevin Montgomery.  "I think we were able to capitalize on a few situations that we have been working on and saw some other areas that we can improve on."

In the second game of the day, UT Martin was again victorious, topping the Southern Lady Jaguars to the tune of 8-3.

The Lady Jaguars led 1-0 after one inning of play before taking a 2-1 lead into the top of the third.  That's when UT Martin seized control of the game, scoring four runs in that inning before adding two in the top of the fourth and another in the top of the sixth after the Lady Jaguars had added a run in the bottom of the fifth.

JSU softball returns to action Thursday at Southern at 5 p.m.
