The Jackson State University Lady Tigers softball team dropped two close ballgames at home to Northwestern State on Wednesday at the JSU Softball Stadium, losing 7-3 in game one and 3-2 in the second contest.
The Lady Tigers dropped to 11-10 on the season following the non-conference doubleheader.
Game 1: NSU 7, JSU 3
It was a low-scoring contest through the first four innings, with Northwestern State scoring a run in the top of the first inning, but neither team scored again until the sixth. That's when the Demons added another run in the top of fifth, followed by two more in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead over the Lady Tigers.
Jackson State then avoided a shutout by scoring three runs in the bottom of the final inning off a three-run homer by infielder Mari Stephens, which also scored third baseman
Rachel Barker and shortstop
Samiyyah Huckabee.
Takiya Hill suffered the loss, her fourth of the season.
Game 2: NSU 3, JSU 2
After seeing the Demons jump out to a 3-0 lead, Jackson State outfielder
Monica Serrano singled to right field, scoring catcher
Isabel Gusman for the team's first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the visitors' lead to 3-1.
The Lady Tigers proceeded to hold NWSU scoreless the remainder of the contest but could only add one run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to account for the game's final score.
JSU hits in the contest came from Gusman (1-for-3) and Serrano (1-3 with 1 RBI).
The Lady Tigers' next contest will be at 12 noon Saturday, when they begin a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference weekend series at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Ala.
