Baseball's Late Rally Comes Up Short In Sunday Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Jackson State University baseball team lost to Bethune-Cookman 8-7 Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Devontae Rhodes and Devontae Rhodes each had three hits to lead the 11 hit-attack.

Trailing 8-4 in the ninth, Marcus Atterberry and Omar Gomez-Rivera walked to lead off the inning. Melton singled to left to score Atterberry. With one out, Ty Hill reached on a throwing error to score Gomez-Rivera. Jaelen Williams followed with a single to left, scoring pinch hitter Colby Guy to cut the margin to 8-6. With two out, El'Rico Riley's infield single scored Hill to bring the Tigers to within one but could get no closer.

JSU scored first in the second inning. With one out, Rhodes led off with an infield single, and moved to third on a two-out single by Asher Akridge. Jefrey Rodriguez' single to third gave the Tigers a 1-0.
In the fourth, Rhodes led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice to give JSU a 2-0 lead.

After the Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead, the Tigers scored again in the eighth. Chevalier Dorris Jr. walked to lead off the inning and moved to second after Ty Hill was hit by pitch. Following a groundout and walk to load the bases, Dorris scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 4-3.

Jackson State returns to action Tuesday at Louisiana Monroe at 6 p.m.
