The Jackson State University softball team defeated Mississippi Valley State 2-1 Friday at the JSU Softball Field in game one of the three game Southwestern Athletic Conference series.
JSU (15-15 overall, 6-4 SWAC) scored the winning run in the sixth.
Isis Taylor won a nine-pitch at-bat with a single through the left side. With one out, Taylor advanced to second on a pass ball and gave way to pinch runner
Breanna Kimber. After a groundout moved Kimber to third, pinch-hitter
Takiya Hill came through with the clutch single to right center, scoring Kimber.
Macie Kuppenbender (6-6) went the distance for the win, allowing only four hits, striking out seven, and walking none.
The Lady Tigers scored in the first. With two out,
Lauren Stewart doubled to right field, and scored on a Taylor triple down the right field line.
Miss. Valley (7-15, 5-4) scored its lone run in the top of the third.
The teams will conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
