NEW ORLEANS, La. – Both the Jackson State University women's and men's tennis teams advanced to Championship Sunday in the 2022 SWAC Tournament at the Pepsi Tennis Center.
The #1 seeded Lady Tigers defeated #6 Florida A&M 4-0, while the #2 JSU men beat #3 Alcorn 4-1.
The JSU women will face #3 Prairie View Sunday at 9 a.m., while the JSU men will play #1 Alabama State at 1 p.m.
Women's Tennis - Lady Tigers 4, FAMU 0: JSU's
Robin Alston,
Daniela Ramos and Zeina Shaaban each took care of business on Saturday in singles action. Alston registered a 6-0, 6-0 win over Adrienne Clayton, Ramos defeating Claudia Sumaia 6-3, 6-0, and Shaaban topping Susan Salinas 6-1, 6-4.
The Lady Tigers (16-6) were likewise impressive in doubles.
Sherine Salem and
Paula Arcarons teamed up to beat the FAMU duo of Aylen Hubeaut/Sierra Sandy by a mark of 6-3, the same score tallied as Ramos and
Tyra-Nicole Whyte, who bested FAMU's Clayton/Haleigh Porter.
Men's Tennis – Tigers 4, Alcorn 1: Against the Braves, Jackson State's
Francisco Vargas,
Agustin Agosto and Hiromu Ideda keyed the Tigers' semifinal victory, each winning their singles matches.
Vargas defeated ASU's Lucas Dini 6-2, 6-2, Agosto beat Isaac Santitto 6-1, 6-3, and Ikeda topped Santiago Rocca 6-2, 6-3.
The victorious Tigers won both completed doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Soria/
Raul Centeno edged ASU's David Pata/Dini 7-6 (7-4), with the No. 3 doubles team of Vargas/
Richy Gamo defeating the Braves' duo of Rocca/Kareem Bowe 6-2.
