The Jackson State University baseball team pulled away from Mississippi Valley State to win 11-2 Friday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference home opener at Braddy Field.
Tied at 2-2 in the sixth, JSU scored nine runs in its final three at-bats.
Ty Hill, who had three hits in the game, singled to right center with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a ground out before scoring on a steal attempt at second base as the Tigers took the lead for good, 3-2.
Jackson State scored four runs in the seventh to take control. Despite five hits in the inning, only one run was batted in on a safety squeeze bunt by Jefery Rodriguez, who reached on an error as Devonte Rhodes scored. JSU added runs on a wild pitch, passed ball, and double-play groundout to take a 7-2 lead.
It was similar in the eighth, as the Tigers had only one hit. A pair of runs scored via walks with the bases loaded, along with a passed ball, and a wild pitch.
Nikelle Galatas earned the win, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run, walking four but striking out five.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 4 p.m.
