Lauren Stewart's big day at the plate powered the Jackson State University softball team to a 10-3 win over Grambling in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.
Jackson State advances to Thursday's 9 a.m. elimination game against the loser of Wednesday's noon game, Texas Southern.
Stewart had a pair of triples as part of a three-hit game, including a bases-clearing triple in an eight-run second inning that gave the Lady Tigers control of the game.
Monica Serrano and
Zoey Keyes each had two hits in the 11-hit attack for Jackson State.
Stewart's big hit to right center scored
Monica Serrano,
Takiya Hill, and
Samiyyah Huckabee for a 4-0 JSU lead. After Mari Stephens was hit by a pitch, a double steal allowed Stewart to score to extend the lead to 5-0.
Alexis Arredondo then reached on a throwing error as Stephens scored for 6-0 lead. With two out, Keys singled to center, scoring Arredondo, ahead of Serrano's single to center, which scored
Isabel Gusman for an 8-0 JSU lead.
Leading 8-2 in the third, Huckabee doubled to center with one out and scored on Stewart's triple to right. Stephens' sacrifice scored Stewart for a 10-2 JSU lead.
