ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Jackson State University baseball team rolled to its fifth straight win with a 27-5 win in seven innings over Mississippi Valley State Friday at Magnolia Field.
JSU scored a season high in runs, scoring in six of the seven innings for the second straight game.
Marcus Atterberry's three-run homer in the second inning powered the 17-hit attack.
Jaelen Williams homered for the second straight game, a two-run shot in the sixth inning as part of a three-hit game as he drove in six runs and scored four times.
Devontae Rhodes (three runs scored, two RBI) and
Caleb Evans (three runs scored, two RBI) also had three hits for Jackson State (28-25 overall, 15-14 SWAC).
Leading 12-4 after five innings, an eight-run fifth inning broke the game wide open as JSU sent 14 hitters to the plate. With one out, Rhodes singled up the middle and moved to second and third on consecutive balks. Rhodes then scored as Williams reached on an error. The next six JSU hitters reached on either a walk or hit by pitch, the last four with the bases loaded. Rhodes' two-run single, and later Williams' RBI single gave the Tigers a 20-4 lead.
Erick Gonzalez got the win on the mound, going five innings allowed eight hits and five runs with two walks and five strikeouts.
Jackson State will conclude the regular season Saturday against Valley in the Gulf Coast Diamond Challenge in Biloxi at MGM Park at 1 p.m.
