GRAMBLING, La. – The Jackson State University baseball team won a 20-12 slugfest at Grambling Tuesday night.
Ty Hill (four runs scored, four RBI) and
Jaelen Williams (three runs scored, two RBI) each had three hits in the 16-hit attack for Jackson State (22-22) in the non-conference victory.
Tied 3-3 after one inning, a four-run second gave JSU the lead for good.
Omar Gomez reached on a fielding error,
Jatavis Melton was hit by a pitch, and
Devontae Rhodes' bunt single loaded the bases. Gomez then scored on a passed ball to give JSU a 4-3 lead. Hill's two-run triple to right field scored Melton and Rhodes for a 6-3 lead. With one out,
Caleb Evans' sacrifice fly scored Hill for a 7-3 lead.
Jackson State added a pair of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to take an 11-3 lead. After a six-run eighth by Grambling cut the J-State lead to 11-9, a nine-run ninth by JSU broke the game open for good.
Marcus Atterberry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Rhodes, who opened the inning with a double, for a 12-9 lead.
El'Rico Riley then singled to center scoring Hill for a 13-9 lead.
Marshal Luiz and
Omar Gomez each had RBI bunt singles to extend to a 15-9 lead. Following an RBI groundout and a walk, Hill's two-run double to right center scored two to make the lead 18-9.
JSU returns to action Friday hosting Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m. at Braddy Field.
