Football Returns To SWAC Play Hosting Miss. Valley

The Jackson State University football team returns to Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday in a 1 p.m. game against Mississippi Valley State at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
 
Saturday is the First Responders Game. All police, fire, medical, and military personnel are admitted free in uniform or with ID. Saturday is also High School Day as the University will welcome thousands to learn more about academic offerings and the JSU Experience.

Jackson State football put on a dominant second-half display in last week's 66-24 non-conference win over Grambling. Leading 21-17 at halftime, JSU outscored Grambling 45-7 over the last 30 minutes in outgaining them 399 to 115.

The offense scored on its first six possessions after halftime (5 TDs, 1 FG), and seven of eight in the second half (6 TDs, 1 FG). For the game, Jackson State gained 608 yards (413 passing / 195 rushing) with 32 first downs.

The defensive effort was stout as well, allowing only 10 first downs, 17 points and 239 total yards. JSU allowed 152 yards on Grambling's two offensive scoring plays (73 and 79 yards) but yielded only 87 yards on the other 54 plays.

QB Shedeur Sanders was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after accounting for a career-high six touchdowns. Sanders completed 22 of 34 passes for 357 yards, five yards shy of his career high, while throwing four touchdown passes (7, 26, career-long 86, 23 yards). He also rushed for a career-high two touchdowns in the game (1, 15 yards).

RB Sy'veon Wilkerson was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week for the second straight time after rushing 23 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start at JSU. Wilkerson averaged 6.1 yards per carry and scored on runs of three and 11 yards in the contest.

LB Aubrey Miller Jr. earned SWAC Defensive honors for the first time this season after an impactful game against Grambling. His forced fumble on the second play of the game led to a GSU turnover and a JSU touchdown on the ensuing drive. Miller finished the game with eight tackles (six solo), with one tackle for loss, one pass breakup, and one quarterback hit in addition to the forced fumble.

The Delta Devils opened the season with non-conference losses to Tarleton, Austin Peay, and Delta State. QB Jelani Eason (138 yards passing, 46 rushing) started the first three games. Jamari Jones (17-25, 182 yards, 1 TD) finished the game vs. Delta St. RB Caleb Johnson (51-166-2) leads the ground game, while WR Jacory Rankin (9-77-0) leads the receiving corps. DL Ronnie Thomas (23 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 8.5 TFL, 1 FF) leads the defense.

JSU Alum Vincent Danzy is in his fifth season as head coach and has been with the program since 2015 after first serving as defensive coordinator.
