LORMAN, MS --The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 25-point showing from the bench on the way to a 59-49 victory against the Alcorn State Lady Braves on the road Monday.
Angel Jackson led the Lady Tigers (4-7, 1-0) with nine points, eight rebounds and seven blocks. Jariyah Covington also added 17 points off the bench and Liz Martino chipped in as well with eight points and four steals.
Jackson State grabbed 41 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Alcorn State's 37, led by Jackson's eight boards.
The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 17 Alcorn State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Martino's four steals led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 13-11 advantage, Jackson State went on a 6-0 run with 2:52 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jackson, to increase its lead to 19-11, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.
Jackson State built that first quarter lead to 24-13 before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:14 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 29-13. The Lady Braves cut into that lead, but the Lady Tigers still enjoyed a 33-19 advantage heading into halftime. Jackson State forced six Alcorn State turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.
Jackson State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run to expand its lead further to 43-26 with 3:53 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Braves had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 45-33 edge. Jackson State turned four offensive rebounds into five second chance points on the way to scoring 12 total points in the quarter.
Jackson State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Daja Woodard's jumper, to grow the lead to 50-33 with 8:48 to go in the contest. The Lady Braves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 59-49 win. Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 14 total points.
