White Grabs 11 Rebounds as Jackson State Comes Up Big at Southern

BATON ROUGE, LA| Daphane White pulled down 11 rebounds as the Jackson State women's basketball team defeated Southern University 64-57 on the road Monday.

The Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Ti'lan Boler, who had 17 points. Jariyah Covington tacked on 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Angel Jackson added nine points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Jackson State grabbed 39 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Southern's 29, led by 11 boards from White.

The Jackson State defense held Southern shooters to just 31.7 percent from the field. The Tigers also kept Genovea Johnson to 5-of-18 shooting in the game.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (11-8, 8-1) started off strong, putting together a 14-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • JSU did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 14 points close to the basket.
  • The Tigers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 25-24 edge.
  • JSU saw non-starters score four of its 11 total points off the bench in the quarter.
  • Southern (9-11, 6-3 SWAC) then took a 40-35 lead following intermission before Jackson State went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Covington, to grab a 44-40 lead with 45 seconds to go in the third.
  • Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Jaguars had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 46-43 edge.
  • Jackson State took advantage of two Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
  • The Tigers increased their margin of victory by outscoring the Jaguars 18-14 in the fourth quarter.
