Strong Defense Leads Jackson State Past Alabama A&M

JACKSON, Miss| The Jackson State women's basketball team cruised past Alabama A&M, 63-35, Monday night in its third Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup of the season.

Two Tigers scored in double figures in the victory led by Liz Martino with 17 points, three rebounds and one assist. Ti'Ian Boler recorded 10 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win. Angel Jackson added 10 rebounds, eight points and four blocks.

How It Happened

· Jackson State (6-7, 3-0 SWAC) got on the board first with a three-point basket from Ti'Ian Boler

· Alabama A&M (5-9, 3-1 SWAC) answered immediately putting up a three of their own from Amani Free

· JSU held on to a five-point lead going into the second quarter, 14-9

· Keshuna Luckett scored on a layup in the paint at 9:51 to open the second, keeping the Tigers ahead 16-9

· Jackson State took a double-digit, 19-9, lead at the 4:28 mark as Daja Woodard made her first free throw

· The Tigers went on a 14-2 run to carry a 34-11 lead into halftime

· Liz Martino came out of the half to hit a three at 9:26 keeping JSU ahead, 37-11

· Jackson State continued to pull away from AAMU taking a 51-25 advantage into the final ten minutes of the game

· JSU outscored the Bulldogs 12-10 in the fourth quarter to seal the 63-35 victory

Inside the Numbers

· Jackson State knocked down eight of 18 long-range attempts

· The Tigers put together a stellar defensive performance, holding the Bulldogs to only 19 percent shooting from the field

· Jackson State finished with 22 points in the paint, 19 bench points, 16 fastbreak points, 16 fast break points and 14 points off 20 Alabama A&M turnovers and

· JSU had a 44-36 edge on the boards in the win while forcing 20 turnovers

Up Next

The Tigers head to Prairie View, Texas to face Prairie View A&M on the road Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the Williams Nicks Building.
