JACKSON, Miss.| After a scoreless first half, the Jackson State soccer team inched its way into scoring position to overcome Southern University 1-0 Friday afternoon. The Tigers scored on a penalty kick from Karime Antonio-Lopez to seal the victory.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (8-9, 7-2 SWAC) saw its first shot of the game at 1:26 in the first half from Kyla Sands that forced Sydney Bellamy to register the save.
  • The Tigers took three more shots in roughly four minutes while Bellamy tacked on two more saves.
  • Jordan Hamilton racked up three saves back-to-back off three SU shots on goal about halfway through the first half.
  • Kendyl Terrell took her chance to give the Tigers the lead but came up with no luck as Bellamy picked up the save.
  • Hamilton picked up on more save at the 31:28 mark before the half ended in a 0-0 draw.
  • Southern (7-5-4, 5-1-3 SWAC) opened the second half with a shot on goal from Sheryah Gavel and Hamilton came up with the save.
  • Kendyl Terrell came up just short on the goal again as she shot right into the hands of Bellamy at 63:49.
  • At 80:56, Southern's Gavel fouled Kyla Gomez in the box to bring up a Tigers' penalty kick.
  • Karime Antonio-Lopez set up for the kick and scored on the PK to give JSU the 1-0 lead.
  • Kendyl Terrell came right back to the goal and just missed the net, hitting the top crossbar as the ball stayed as the Tigers continued with possession at 81:19.
  • Jackson State's defense stood tall as it held Southern scoreless in the match and the Tigers took the win.
