HAMMOND, La.| Daphane White posted 12 points and 10 rebounds as Jackson State held Southeastern off in its first road victory of the season. Ti'Ian Boler knocked down a dagger 3-pointer with 1:07 left in the game to put Jackson State ahead 58-51, to help the Tigers to a 63-54 victory Monday afternoon.
Jackson State (3-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Angel Jackson, who had 13 points, two steals and two blocks. Daphane White added a double-double from the bench and Keshuna Luckett added eight points and four assists.
JSU collected 42 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Southeastern's 33, led by White's 10 boards. The Tigers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 15 rebounds into 16 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense held SELU shooters to only 38.5 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
Jackson State started off strong, putting together a 15-12 lead heading into the second quarter. Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 15 points close to the basket.
Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 1:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Miya Crump, to increase its lead to 35-28, a score that would hold until halftime. Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.
After intermission, Jackson State held on to its advantage and owned a 46-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Jackson State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 11 third-quarter points.
Jackson State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Boler's three, to grow the lead to 53-41 with 8:04 to go in the contest. The Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 63-54 win. Jackson State got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring five fast break points.
