SAN JUAN Puerto Rico| The Jackson State women's basketball team held UPR-Mayagüez to just 11.1 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-18 shooting performance on the way to an 80-33 win over the Janes Friday evening.
Angel Jackson led the Tigers with nine points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Miya Crump also added six points and five steals and Hayleigh Breland chipped in as well with eight points, six rebounds and two steals.
Jackson State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 16 assists on 30 made field goals. Individually, Keshuna Luckett was on top of the distribution list for the Tigers with three assists and Ja'Leah Hickmon also added three assists of her own.
Jackson State forced 25 UPR-Mayagüez turnovers while tuning those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Crump's five steals led the way for Jackson State.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (4-1) started out the scoring by going on a 13-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Daphane White, to take an early lead with 4:25 left in the first quarter.
- The Tigers then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 23-3 advantage.
- Jackson State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 12 of its 23 total points.
- JSU built that first quarter lead to 34-9 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 3:04 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 42-9, a score that would hold until halftime.
- Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 19 points close to the basket.
- The Tigers continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 50-11 with 6:24 to go in the third.
- JSU held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 63-24 edge.
- Jackson State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 11 of the team's 21 third-quarter points.
- The Tigers started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mya Pratcher's layup, to grow the lead to 69-24 with 8:07 to go in the contest.
- JSU kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 80-33 win.
- Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
