Men's Hoops loss 63-74 to Northwestern

Evanston, Ill. Ken Evans scored 23 points, but the Jackson State men's basketball team fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 74-63 on the road Friday night inside the Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The Tigers (4-9) had two players score in double figures, led by Evans, who had 23 points. Chase Adams added 13 points and six assists, and Zeke Cook added six points, seven rebounds, and four steals.

The Jackson State offense was impressive from downtown, making nine 3-pointers on 19 attempts. Evans hit five treys for the Tigers in the contest.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-2, Jackson State went on a 10-0 run with 17:26 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Evans, to take a 12-9 lead. The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 39-33.

Northwestern kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 63-48 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Coltie Young's three-pointer, to shrink the deficit to 63-53 with 9:47 to go in the contest. Northwestern responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-63.

Game Notes

  • The Tigers shot well from three-point range, knocking down nine of 19 long-range attempts.
  • Evans led the Tigers with a game-high 23 points.
  • Evans tied a season-high five 3-pointers made (also a career-high for Evans). 
  • Jackson State got a team-high seven rebounds from Zeke Cook.

The Tigers will play their first home game of the 2023-24 season when they open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play against Alcorn State. Jackson State will host the Braves on Saturday, Jan. 6, in a contest slated to start at 3:30 p.m. and be broadcast live on HBCUGo.
