VICKSBURG, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team put together an admirable performance on Friday, but ultimately came up short in its season opener against Alcorn State, 4-2 in day one of the River City Classic.
Freshman Macie Kuppenbender (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Jackson State (0-1). Freshman Victoria Salazar was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 3.1 shutout innings without allowing a hit.
Freshman Amaya Ruiz led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Tigers (0-1) first put runs on the board in the first inning. Jackson State managed to push across two runs in the inning. Alcorn State then scored two times over the remaining six innings to break the tie and grab the 4-2 win.

- Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed two runs across.
- The JSU pitchers faced 31 Alcorn State hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out one.
- The Tigers drew four walks from Alcorn State pitching.

The Tigers will return for day two of the River City Classic to face Southeastern Baptist at 10:00 a.m. and Tennessee State at noon in Vicksburg, Miss.
