Baseball Beats PV, Wins Twice In Astros Cactus Jack HBCU Classic

HOUSTON – The Jackson State baseball team defeated Prairie View 8-3 Sunday on the third and final day of the Houston Astros Cactus Jack HBCU Classic at Minute Maid Park.

Tied at 3-3 after seven innings, JSU took the lead for good with a five-run eighth, scoring four different ways. Jordon Smiley led off with a pinch-hit bunt single and moved to second on a walk to Jaelen Williams. With one out, the runners advanced on a wild pitch before Caleb Evans walked to load the bases. Marshal Luiz was hit by a pitch, scoring Smiley to give JSU the lead for good at 4-3. Colby Guy then walked to score Williams, before a wild pitch scored Evans for a 6-3 lead. Daniel Bannon's two-run single to left center scored Luis and Guy for the final margin.

Bannon went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored in the nine-hit attack. Guy got a no-decision on the mound, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned), walking three and striking out 10 in five innings. Daelen Caraway got the win in relief, as five JSU pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts.

Jackson State (2-1) opens the home schedule Tuesday at 6 p.m. vs. Southeastern La. at Braddy Field.
