JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 5-1 victory against the Kentucky State Thorobreds on Saturday.
Senior MacIe Kuppenbender (1-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Jackson State (4-6). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.
Sophomore Hermariya Stephens led the way offensively for the Lady Tigers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, a triple and an RBI. Freshman Jace Jackson put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk. Junior Samiyyah Huckabee also chipped in, going 1-for-3 for Jackson State with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning.
- Huckabee came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.
- After the Thorobreds rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Tigers came back to retake the lead in the fifth inning, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Tigers.
- Jackson State held Kentucky State scoreless before building their lead to 5-1 the following inning.
- The score remained 5-1 for the rest of the game, as Jackson State coasted to the win.

- The Tigers' power output was led by Stephens, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.

GAME 2 JSU vs. Tuskegee
The Jackson State Tigers fought back from down 4-3 in the fifth inning to knock off the Tuskegee Golden Tigers 6-5 Saturday.
Junior Takiya Hill (1-3) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Jackson State (5-6). The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. Freshman Marissa Medina also made an impact in the circle for the Lady Tigers, starting the ballgame and throwing three innings, giving up four runs, zero earned, on four hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
In the batter's box, the Lady Tigers were led by freshman Jace Jackson, who went 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI. Sophomore Hermariya Stephens compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Precious Cooper also helped out for Jackson State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers were trailing 4-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board.
- Jackson State got an RBI single from Cooper, scoring Jackson from second base.
- The Tigers kept the Golden Tigers off the board before narrowing the gap further in the fourth.
- Jackson State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Stephens' single, which tightened the Golden Tigers' lead to 4-3.
- Tuskegee expanded their lead to 5-3 before the Jackson State offense got back to work, overtaking the Golden Tigers to grab a 6-5 advantage in the sixth.
- The score remained 6-5 for the rest of the game, as Jackson State held on for the win.
