Jackson has double-double in Jackson State's 66-43 victory against Texas Southern

JACKSON, Miss.| Angel Jackson secured a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to help the Jackson State women's basketball team knock off the Texas Southern Lady Tigers 66-43 at home Saturday.

In addition to Jackson's impressive performance, JSU (17-8, 14-1) was led by Daphane White, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, and by Ti'lan Boler, who added nine points coming off the bench.

Jackson State out-rebounded Texas Southern 48-27 in Saturday's game, led by Jackson's 12 boards. The Lady Tigers also grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and scored 20 second chance points.

The Jackson State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Texas Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Ja'Leah Hickmon led the way individually for the Lady Tigers with four steals.

How It Happened

  • After falling behind 2-0, Jackson State went on a 12-0 run with 8:33 left in the first quarter to take a 12-2 lead.
  • JSU then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-11 advantage.
  • Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 18 points close to the basket.
  • Jackson State built that first quarter lead to 27-16 before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 4:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Jackson, to increase its lead to 37-16, a score that would hold until halftime.
  • JSU dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.
  • Jackson State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Keshuna Luckett, to expand its lead further to 44-16 with 7:31 to go in the third.
  • Before the conclusion of the third period, JSU had cut into that lead somewhat, but entered the fourth quarter with a 50-31 edge.
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.
  • Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Hayleigh Breland's three, to grow the lead to 61-38 with 4:33 to go in the contest.
  • JSU held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 66-43 win.
  • Jackson State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
