BIRMINGHAM, Ala.| The Jackson State women's basketball team fell to Southern University in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Semifinals of the tournament at Bartow Arena Friday evening. The Tigers fell at the buzzer 65-64.
Jackson State had two players score in double figures, led by Ti'lan Boler, who had 18 points, six rebounds and two steals. Daphane White added 15 points and Angel Jackson added seven points and five blocks.
JSU out-rebounded Southern 40-35 in Friday's game, led by nine boards from Daja Woodard. The Tigers also grabbed 12 offensive rebounds and scored eight second chance points.
Jackson State's defense held Southern to only 36.7 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (21-9, 18-2 SWAC) opened the match going on a 5-0 run with 1:58 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jariyah Covington, to take a 17-13 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
- The Tigers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 33-31.
- Southern (17-14, 12-6 SWAC) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-31 advantage before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jackson, to grab a 37-35 lead with 7:44 to go in the third.
- Southern responded to seize a 49-48 lead entering the fourth quarter. Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
- Jackson State kept the Lady Jaguars from increasing their lead before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Areyanna Hunter's jumper, to seize a 57-51 lead with 4:40 to go in the contest.
- The Jaguars re-asserted control, outscoring the Lady Tigers 14-7 the rest of the way to hand Jackson State the 65-64 loss.
