Jackson State Leaves 10 on Base in Loss to FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.| The Jackson State softball team had a hard time cashing in runs leaving ten runners on base in its 6-5 loss at the hands of the Florida A&M  Sunday afternoon.

Takiya Hill (2-6) took the loss in the circle for Jackson State. Victoria Salazar was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit.

At the plate, the Tigers were paced by senior Samiyyah Huckabee, who went 1-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Freshman Brooklyn Morris put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Monica Serrano also contributed for Jackson State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jackson State (10-14, 0-3 SWAC) first put runs on the board in the fourth inning after trailing the Rattlers 2-0.
  • The Tigers scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by Huckabee reaching on a fielder's choice.
  • JSU lost the lead they built in the fourth, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 5-3.
  • Jackson State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Serrano's single, which brought the score level at 5-5.
  • Florida A&M (9-10, 3-0 SWAC) then scored one time over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 6-5 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed three runs across.
  • The Tigers out-hit the Rattlers at a 9-7 clip.
  • Jackson State went 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
  • JSU's pitchers faced 34 Florida A&M hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out three.
  • The Tigers drew four walks from Florida A&M pitching and Huckabee led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two RBI.
  • FAMU was led offensively by sophomore Kiauna Watson, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
  • Nadia Zenteno led the Rattlers pitching staff, throwing seven innings of five-run ball.

The Tigers will travel to Grambling, La. to take on Grambling State for a mid-week matchup Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for  4:00 p.m. at the GSU Softball Complex.
