Jackson State Never Trailed in Victory Over Mississippi Valley State

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 16-3 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday afternoon at the JSU Softball Field.

Takiya Hill (3-6) started in the circle and picked up the win for Jackson State. The right-handed pitcher went five innings, giving up only three runs on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out one.

Rachel Barker led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple and an RBI. Monica Serrano put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Alexis Arredondo also chipped in, going 2-for-2 for JSU with two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jackson State (11-15, 1-4 SWAC) got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first inning with the game still scoreless.
  • Mari Stephens came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.
  • Mississippi Valley State failed to push any runs across before the Tigers' offense got back to scoring the next inning.
  • Jackson State picked up a couple on a two-run triple from Barker, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.
  • Mississippi Valley State narrowed Jackson State's lead to 3-2 before the Tigers stretched the advantage to 14-2 in the third inning.
  • JSU's bats heated up in the third inning, scoring 11 runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Arredondo.
  • The Devillettes fought back, closing the gap to 14-3 until Jackson State added some insurance in the fourth.
  • Jalia Hubbard and Marissa Medina each scored a run for the Tigers in the inning, bringing the Jackson State advantage to 16-3.
  • The score remained 16-3 for the rest of the game, as the Tigers coasted to the win.

The Tigers will close out their home conference opening weekend with a doubleheader against the Devillettes Sunday at the JSU Softball Field. The doubleheader is scheduled for noon and 2:00 p.m.
