JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team jumped ahead of Southern University early in Wednesday's matchup as the Tigers led the Jags 3-0 at the end of the first inning on the way to a 6-1 victory at the JSU Softball Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson State (14-15, 3-3 SWAC) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff batter Mari Stephens tripled to center field and Brooklyn Morris' sacrifice fly scored Stephens.
- Isabel Gusman came up to the plate and hit a homerun bringing in Marissa Medina giving JSU the 3-0 lead at the end of the first.
- The Tigers capped the top of the second and third innings going three up and three down as SU remained scoreless in the ballgame.
- Jackson State got back to scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Jace Jackson stole home with two outs.
- Samiyyah Huckabee doubled to left field to score Rachel Barker to make the score 5-0.
- In Stephens' second appearance at the plate, she registered an RBI single to right field and Huckabee scored, increasing the Tigers' margin to 6-0.
- Southern scored its only run in the top of the fifth inning as B Willis stole home on a throw down to second.
- The Tigers' defense held SU to hang on to its lead and secure with the 6-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jackson State recorded six runs, seven hits and one error
- Southern finished with one run, five hits and one error
- Takiya Hill took the win in the circle for JSU registering two strikeouts and only allowing one hit
- Raquel Latta suffered the loss for Southern
UP NEXT
The Tigers will travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. to face Bethune-Cookman in a three-day weekend series. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. Friday.
