ITTA BENA, MS --The Jackson State men's basketball team out-rebounded the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 36-32 on the way to a 68-60 win on the road Saturday.
The Tigers (13-18, 12-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Coltie Young, who had 15 points and three steals. Ken Evans tacked on 14 points and six rebounds and Chase Adams added seven points and two steals.
Led by Evans' three offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 19 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Mississippi Valley State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Young's three steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 6-4 advantage, Jackson State went on a 6-0 run with 15:54 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Young, to increase its lead to 12-4. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 30-28 advantage. Jackson State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 30 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Jackson State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 59-56 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 64-56 with 1:32 to go in the contest. The Tigers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 68-60 win. Jackson State made the most of five offensive rebounds to tack on 11 second chance points out of 38 total in the period.
