Jackson State Accomplishes a 20-Win Season with Victory Over MVSU

ITTA BENA, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team knocked down 11-of-24 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 45.8 percent from deep in an 84-65 victory over Mississippi Valley State on the road Saturday afternoon at R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.

The Tigers had four players score in double figures, led by Daphane White, who had 17 points. Ti'lan Boler added 15 points and Jariyah Covington helped out with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Jackson State out-rebounded Mississippi Valley State 47-40 in Saturday's game, paced by Angel Jackson's eight boards. The Tigers also pulled down 14 offensive rebounds and scored 16 second chance points.

Jackson State's defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 39.7 percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened
  • After jumping out to a 10-4 advantage, Jackson State (20-8, 17-1) went on a 9-0 run with 5:21 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from White, to increase its lead to 19-4.
  • The Tigers maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 26-11 advantage.
  • Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 26 points.
  • JSU used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 43-27 edge.
  • Jackson State saw non-starters score six of its 17 total points off the bench in the quarter.
  • After the half, Jackson State held on to its advantage and owned a 61-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Jackson State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
  • JSU kept widening that lead, expanding it to 76-59 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 82-59 with 2:13 to go in the contest.
  • The Devilettes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 84-65 win.
