LORMAN, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Alcorn with a 17-5 win in seven innings Sunday.
Myles White went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the 11-hit attack for Jackson State (11-2), which has now won nine straight contests. Jordan Young went 2-for-4 with four runs scored, Marcus Atterberry went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI, and Bret Mersman had a hit and drove in three runs.
A six-run first inning set the tone for the Tigers. Daniel Bannon walked to lead off the game. With one out, he stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch ahead of a walk to Ty Hill. Bannon then scored on a passed ball to give JSU a 1-0 lead. Jordon Smiley then reached base on a throwing error and stole second ahead of Mersman's two-run single, scoring Hill and Smiley for a 3-0 lead. Following a walk to Atterberry, and a groundout by Marshal Luiz scored Mersman for a 4-0 lead. White's two-run single to right field scored Young and Atterberry for the 6-0 lead.
Leading 7-0 after three innings, Atterberry's two-run single highlighted a six-run fourth inning that broke the game open.
Colby Guy (2-0) earned the win on the mound, allowing seven hits (all singles) and three runs, walking four and striking out two.
Jackson State returns to action March 14 at Louisiana Lafayette at 6 p.m.
