JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team split its Sunday doubleheader with Florida A&M but won the series, 2-1 in its final home games of the season. The Tigers fell in game one 14-9 and won game two 5-3.
GAME 1-JSU 9, FAMU 14
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Florida A&M (19-22, 12-11 SWAC) got on the board first in the top of the first inning scoring three runs before the Tigers got the bats in their hands.
- Jackson State (24-25, 13-11 SWAC) got a single from Isabel Gusman with two outs then a double from Marissa Medina which allowed Gusman to score for its first run.
- Monica Serrano kept the bat hot as she doubled to right field to score Medina.
- Serrano also scored on Jace Jackson's single to tie the game at three heading into the second inning.
- FAMU answered, scoring four more runs in the top of the second to take an 8-4 lead.
- The Rattlers held JSU scoreless for two innings and increased their lead in the top of the fourth, 13-4.
- Jackson State scored again in the bottom of the fourth as Amaya Ruiz came home on a fielder's choice during Brooklyn Morris' at-bat.
- Gusman came through with the RBI single to score Samiyyah Huckabee as the Tigers trailed 13-6 going into the fifth inning.
- The Tigers defense held strong in the top and began to close in on the gap in the bottom of the fifth.
- Huckabee doubled to center field to score Jackson.
- Mari Stephen singled to right to bring Alexis Arredondo home as JSU continued to trail 13-8.
- FAMU went scoreless again in the top of the sixth, but Jackson State scored again in the bottom of the inning off a solo homerun from Isabel Gusman.
- Florida A&M scored one more time in the top of the seventh to secure the 14-9 win as JSU wasn't able to stage the comeback in the bottom of the inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jackson State registered 18 hits, nine runs and one error.
- Florida A&M finished with 18 hits, 14 runs and no errors.
- Macie Kuppenbender took the loss for JSU in the circle allowing 13 runs.
- Nadia Zenteno got the win for FAMU pitching all seven innings.
- Victoria Salazar pitched 3.1 innings for the Tigers.
- Mari Stephens and Jace Jackson each went 3-for-4 at the plate for JSU.
GAME 2-JSU 5, FAMU 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the first time in the series, neither team scored in the first inning.
- Jackson State got on the board first in the bottom of the third as Mari Stephens walked during her at-bat and Samiyyah Huckabee stole third and advanced home on the throw.
- FAMU too the 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth as Nyah Morgan doubled to left field and Melkayla Irvis scored the Rattlers' first run.
- Brianne Hill ground out on the opposite side to allow Amaya Gainer to score for the 2-1 lead.
- JSU put two runs on the board with two outs as Huckabee tripled to center field scoring Jace Jackson and Isis Taylor for the 3-2 advantage.
- Before closing out the fourth inning, Stephens smashed a two-run RBI as JSU carried a 5-2 lead in the fifth.
- After two scoreless innings, FAMU score its third run with two outs as Neriah Lee singled to right field to score Mia Blasingane.
- The Tigers' defense held up to get one more out and take the win 5-3 win and the series victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jackson State recorded six hits, five runs and one error in the win.
- Florida A&M finished with nine hits, three runs and no errors.
- Brooklyn Morris secured the win in the circle pitching all seven innings.
- Lauryn Peppers took the loss in the circle for FAMU pitching six innings and suffering five runs and five errors on defense.
- Isis Taylor went 2-for-3 for JSU.
- Mia Blasingane led the Rattlers at the plate going 3-for-3.
